Norwich-State-Hospital
The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Kyle why do you have to be such a ball licker
Chill with what? Gotta problem with people in tunnels? WTF man?
chill with that
Someone POST SOMETHING!!
I didn't see those on Taps. Maybe we should make a sequel lol
And yeah see, bomb knows what's up... He was attacked by a haunted toilet at nsh! That's why he shat in the corner-instead of just use a toilet.. This is even worse though, they're really pissed now bud! One thousand toilets will be angling themselves in various, random positions as bomb drives by now. Gonna smash em all?
Yeah..pics or it didn't happen! You think that since we're trapped in tunnels now (thanks alot guys, btw), that we cannot have access to the internet? That's an awful stereotype! I mean it's not easy, what do you think they need all the souls for? Don't ask me how it works, idk.. But yeah, they don't take the souls.... just to be dicks, it's so they can get dial up Internet access. They got an xbox too only one controller though
Show the picture you big lier.
what the f*ck to both of those posts... because you mentioned it i actually took a picture of the collapsed tunnel between salmon and admin last week and i don't really recall seeing any type of transmitter antenna or having a wi-fi signal... you must be in a pretty decent spot down there
I went to the theater today and took a shit in the corner. I tried to take a picture but passed out due to the smell. I woke up and a raccoon was eating my ass.
Hey.. They don't want scrap metal... They want your souls!! You don't wanna feel the rath man- not pretty. Ok well don't say I didn't warn you-I knocked a piece of peely paint off the wall once, by accident: now I'm stuck in the tunnel between salmon and admin for all eternity! Yeah, we got the interwebs down here.....what?
sure. the ghosts of the Jewish cemetery, the century-old Preston farmers, and the mentally ill are all talking to us during the day in tongues, while we simply strip copper out. who knew spirits needed precious metals to survive. i think i saw one of the spirits at Shetucket last week trying to cash in some copper. makes plenty of sense.
No..no... People never actually go inside-that's just a myth.. The voices you hear..well they're pissed! And they're coming for the people trying to destroy their home!! That's right! Tell them all to run now, before it's too late- or you may never leave!
I don't think were alone haha. You think a silly 6 foot fence will keep people out? They might get slightly intimidated by the giant Manafort workers, but they're still not afraid to hop it or slip through whatever holes they can find. Even during the day we can hear people in the tunnels near Powerhouse.
Seems to me..you have the inside scoop.. However..don't think you guys are "alone" in there.. For the most part however.
Yeah, most copper and other small items some bums would like to get their hands on. Manafort currently has a 40 yd. dumpster on the site that they're using to put all the copper pipes and fittings in. It gets pulled out to the security parking lot during the day and gets pushed back in the garage for after hours. It hasn't been taken away once yet, I really don't think there's gonna be enough copper to fill it halfway... what do I know I'm just the demo guy. I have no use for the damn copper. The asbestos and lead is gonna be trucked separately to Providence and most of the brick will remain onsite to be sold off at auctions.
That fence is almost a joke.. It nearly offends me.. Do they think UE's are lazy,Stupid or midgets? ..or did they just want to save money by building a fence a 5 year old could see over? .. whatever.
"Clean" ..as far as metals are concerned I believe is what you are talking about? Just out of curiosity ..would you happen to know who Manafort uses for trucking material out of the site?
I've been there every day so far, the fence is almost done, only the front portion remains to be completed. We were in Powerhouse today removing what copper we could find. Lodge and Ribicoff are almost clean, Kettle has little left as well. Other laborers are saying abatement won't be starting for months; good luck working in the winter. I think World LLC is more fit for the job, and I agree with you. Preston is in over its head, and they've already gone past the point of no return. In my opinion, anyway
Manafort..must haven been contacted..Being that they are already under contract with PRA..and have already begun phase1 of the project..They have already been on-site taking scrap metals from Powerhouse and Kettle buildings..Fence posts have been set-up in the rear of the campus as well.. So.. all and all.. I believe Manafort Bros..Specifically Justin Manafort is in fact.. On Board with the entire project. Comments were made about Manafort's capability in large scale renovations and remediation's..PRA was trying to sell the state on a contract with Manafort from the start it seems..Commenting mostly on the Mohegan Sun project (I believe) ..being 30+ stories tall and coming in (at) or (Under) budget..$$$ talks and that's the most important aspect of the entire project in the Town's eyes..PRA members and the community of Preston BOTH are mostly concerned of (WHO) will pay..and who will Profit off all of this mess that they have got on their hands. Over all..the PDF may in fact be good (old) news that was overlooked at some point..The minutes and agenda's with the PRA don't harp to heavily on the (after) demolition side of things to often..As it seems due to the RFP they plan to have that site compact full of stuff..Marina's,healthcare,Retail,Homeland security etc.. There's a huge list..I bet anything that they are a bit over their head.
As far as I am aware Manafort has not been contacted from either World or Thames Landing about the full proposal and phases. I would have to agree more with what World LLC wants to do.
Indeed..This was a rather old proposal..But I believe that they would obviously have to update the State with whatever plans they were making..Even though they still have yet to post said contract with Manafort Bros as public knowledge.
I read most of the pdf up to page 25, and it appears they want to renovate more then they do just rebuild. Buying off the Norwich side would help though.
Interestingly enough.. I don't think that the current demo-plan even nearly covers half the buildings on site.. After reviewing the Thames_river_Landing RFQ.. It mostly says that buildings are to be "Renovated" to fit a new use.. Buildings including the theater would be renovated to modern uses..upgraded and be continued to use. Along with Housing and healthcare.. Maybe not.. I may be wrong.. but at least review it for yourself.. There has been no UPDATED RFQ put in it's place..so My assumption would be that..this is the plan. Preston Plans. ..the link should already be to page 20..which covers what is to be built and (renovated) excluding most building names.
yeah things have been doing just fine round here. i bought a harley so i have been haveing a ton of fun rideing that everywhere. and its awsome on gas too. yeah i definitly think bomb has been a patient there and also many other places as well. its a real shame what they are going to do to the place. if i wasnt serving i would totally be a radical protester camped on the side of the road next to the place with save nsh painted on my chest lol.
I'm telling you..If it's the same place. It's a bust.. In my opinion. Yeah..just sent you some info..
Mansfield isn't that far away from where I live... Yeah I'll hit you up on facebook when I get home (Can't log on from the computers at school)
Mansfield is a bust..If you're talking about the same location that I know of out there..Sounds better than it truly is.. I have co-ordinates if you'd like to see for yourself.. It's not worth the gas to get out there. Msg me on Facebook I will send you the link. As of right now..I am free as can be for Saturday..I can only assume your talking about Depolito's showing of the film? I might be inclined to go. However..I can think of other places I would much rather be fore 55 minutes..lol. Jk. I will send you a msg on Facebook to let you know my plans..as of now.
Stab..You should free yourself up this weekend..Act fast bud.
Anyone else on here think that bomb himself might have been a patient? If not then maybe he should be a patient somewhere? I think that is totally a possibility..... Bomb, the Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital is a nice psych hospital to vacation at. Maybe you should check it out sometime. There is always CVH as well... Haha lmao. PM- What are you planning for this weekend? Really need to get out and explore! (plus library on Saturday...) Plan on going to a place in Mansfield. I'll send you some pics when I go! Stab- You know if you will be able to go on Saturday or not? Lemme know.
Paul, I know you are still probably reading this, so hi. (bit weird exploring without you since that's how we met and all.) Have to learn to separate exploring from you....
Indeed, You have been rather distant lately from Forbidden-Places.net!! What's new in our neck of the woods? ..Oh you know. People building mile long fences, Scrapping Kettle and Powerhouse, Blocking up multiple tunnels and just the overall dedication to destroy a relic of history that we know as..NSH. But other than that..nothing I guess. JPT has been distant due to "THE MAN" blocking his site at work..he Pops in to share his two cents every now and again..Bomb is still floating around the interwebs flaunting his almighty (Knowledge) everywhere he can.. Things haven't changed much around here. Hopefully all has been well in your world .. You know, when people pop back in to say "hi" it makes me wonder about those who ..errrm .. dont ..like.. Where in the hell is ZOE?? last we spoke was about his Pennhurst project!! months ago!
