The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Well there was a toilet some one dragged our of....damn I cant remember the name....by Bell in back...anyway. bomb was always scared of something while worki.g...and some one would turn the toilet so everytime bomb drove by it was turned a different way.....apparently this really got to ol bomb who would waste hours trying to figure it all out! So one nite as the toilet turned bomb flipped out and smashed the toilet!! Whoever was doin it really drove him nuts.... People always did little stuff to let us k.ow they were there an watchin us. The sheet ghost in Russell. Foil ghosts writing our names in windows bottles in road etc.... once I relaxed workin was fun there...

There's one in Manchester as well..It still has all the buildings for the most part..You can see the launch area but it's fenced in ..the communications towers are there as well. The silo itself isn't accessible as far as I know..The hatches that are littered around the grounds are welded shut and one that is rusted apart is totally flooded..as is probably most of the underground of the site. ..Wikipedia has some old one's that pretty much don't exist anymore..But it's still interesting. Missles. There is still on in Bridgeport I heard..but like Remington, Whatever is in Bridgeport doesn't last long,..You can also search Youtube.com ..I know of a few people that have video's of the one we had explored..

The history of the mental health field in New England alone proves that staff had molested and/or raped and sexually assaulted patients. Titicut follies which was banned throughout Massachusetts depicted another issue in the early days of mental health. Titicut depicted patients being beaten and starved, Told to disrobe in public areas etc..It really wasn't that long ago if you think about it realistically. Im sure it was easy for staff to brush of investigations of pregnant "inmates" or patients..But the reality is as it is stated in this somewhat paranoid set of emails sent by this individual. I understand that there is some sort of record regarding death of individuals at these various hospitals..I had one patient in particular that I was attempting to investigate through NSH..I had found out that she had been transferred to CVH from NSH and had died that same week..The DC stated that she had died in Windsor.

I am sure there was a jimmy there and I am sure there was a jimmy discharged in those or around the dates given, how do I know this, the names Jim, Jimmy, and James are popular and the volume of patients admitted/discharged in an institution of that size it has to be true, how ever jimmy may have been discharged, or transferred to another building and the nurses may have been using scare tactics to keep the boys in line. it seems all the institutions youth sections had a jimmy of sorts.
lets talk about the trip Jr took through the tunnels, first off there is/was no tunnel to the firehouse and none connecting to the admin section to the green house section, nor is there a tunnel directly to the greenhouses. second who lets a kid admitted or visitor to wander the tunnel.
and last this has come up before here and other sites about looking through records for death certificates to show let say jimmy died on site, the place you die is where you are pronounced dead, even tho this was a hospital there are some places and times when there are no medical doctors on site, the body is loaded into an ambulance and hauled to the nearest hospital and pronounced dead, the death certificate is listed as the medical hospital and the psychiatric hospital gives the patient a medical discharge and is never heard from again. In other words a psychiatric doctor, nurse, orderly, med tech, accountant, or security guard can not legally pronounce you dead only an MD (medical doctor) can, and its rear for them to be on site of a psychiatric hospital. There were a few doctors who practice at the nearby hospitals who would come by once or twice a week for physicals, check ups, follow ups. Any one who needed emergency care was transported to a nearby hospital, even those who are criminally insane. The difference of course is they got a security escort. If anyone has a problem with the logic in this too bad. And if anyone wants to discus Birth Certificates we can, but I can assure you there were Hundreds of births from young unwed mothers.

It's an interesting read. I can't really tell what to make of it for sure.. It seems rather fabricated to me. The fact that a patient in any type of mental facility has and remembers a friend named "jimmy" who seems to have vanished after visiting the Admin building is irrelevant..Some patients see and talk to people who aren't there all the time. My opinion is that "jimmy" had never existed..The fact that the writer had never gone the logical way of finding the truth leaves me to believe there was no truth in the matter.. Why couldn't he ask staff? Search records? Why not search Census?..that would surely prove the existence of "Jimmy".. Let's say he did exist.. It's quite possible he had been transferred to another facility or area on the grounds. Patients could be moved constantly..which would also explain "go admin no come back." It's possible that you may have had a meeting of some sort where your fate was explained to you and from there you are transferred.. It's patient rights that your business isn't blurted about to other patients etc..which is why his cousin would assume he disappeared. ..The believable part of this group of emails is the FACT that patients were taught that it was okay and or funny/right/good to have sex with one another..I've read multiple accounts of patients being told to have sex with one another for the benefit of the staff involved..it was also common for the women to be sexually assaulted by staff and other patients. It's very easy to manipulate the minds of most individuals who were in these facilities at that time. Also, as far as patient beatings etc..It was a regular practice to use force on these patients..The time frame is far before the use of Haldol and other sedation techniques in order to get a patient to comply. If a patient was being aggressive towards someone or themselves, Physical force could possibly be the only means that staff had to get the individual to comply. ..The rest of the story is seems irrelevant..To me it's just a fabricated recollection of what this guys mentally ill cousin thought and felt on a regular basis. 90% of the things he had mentioned are "normal" occurrences at that time..Hearing patients crying and screaming is something that happens constantly, Physical abuse, sexual abuse, patient discharges/transferees etc..it's all rather normal. My bet is..this "Bobby" character is a bit more ill than what is portrayed..After all he was in Penn for 26 years..? To me..I wouldn't take a single word he has to say seriously.. ..But that's just me. I've heard patients mutter off about ducks and banana's before ..It's really not something you take to heart. ..Who cares if Jimmy went shopping forever anyways? ..haha

However, i came across this 'personal account' yesterday from someone who wasnt a resident of Pennhurst but had a cousin that was. Norwich was and still is one of the most amazing asylums in the North East..New England's asylums such as Danvers and even taunton have all met there demise already..Now Norwich..
