Norwich-State-Hospital
The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Special thanks to Dr. Bob for sharing the old postcards.
Just not a lot to add to the current conversations. As for Sparkles well, I cant say.

lol nice! way to tell it like it is. that is really odd about that station, whos the bazillionaire?
..my Norwich mystery women died in 95.. booo
Your right..by all means. This site is here for everyone.. all I can ask out of anyone on THIS forum..is that we maintain a calm cool attitude..and CONTRIBUTE useful posts..and maybe use spell check at the end of posting. Also CAPS LOCK makes nearly every post seem like a waste of time. So..look back at your posts from the last year..and count how many of them you have contributed any pictures..posts..or information that has anything to do with abandonment or UE. ..that is what this site is about..You may want to google search a forum about man periods..or something of that nature..where you can go and bitchfit with other users.
As far as English Station goes..it was at one time hooked to the power grid of new haven county..UI a bizzilionaire walked away from the power plant claiming that it was obsolete. It stuck my interest because with such a wealthy company you would think it would be like spending a few cents to update the boilers and control stations. It was a prime location for the plant sitting basically on it own little island in New Haven. It has been abandoned for a while now..
Bara Hack in Pomfret is an old colonial village with some remaining foundations and quite an interesting cemetery. Allegedly quite haunted but upon my visit's (with a crew that experiences "paranormal activity" every time they go) I've never witnessed anything. I've got a couple anomalies on some pictures but nothing that doesn't also have non-paranormal possible explanations. If you go there wanting to experience something, you probably will, if you go there truly skeptical, you won't experience anything. It is private property and there's really no parking around that area but from a historical view, it's a very cool place.
and youre competancy astounds us all......
YOU ALL WISH SHE DID THIS SITE DOES NOT BELONG TO ONE PERSON IT IS HERE FOR EVERYBODY SO SPELL CHECK THAT YOU KNOW I COULD GIVE A SHIT LESS IF SPELLED RIGHT YOU ALL GET MY POINT.AN HEY CHRIS THIS ONE IS JUST FOR YOU K.I.S.S M.Y A.S.S AN TO SPARKLES YOU CAN,T EVEN SCARE A DEAD FISH LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO DUMN ASS
did a little bit of research and apparently they have security there much similar to nsh. also read the story on the history of the place. definatly seems like something out of a movie. and to sparkles, it doesnt matter if im in the military, its all about who you know. being in the military definatly has its perks, especially if youre a doctor, you can do things civillians cant. but anyways, i will be going to dudley town soon and also to another abandoned facility which i cannot disclose the name of on here but it is definatly going to be something. on a lighter note, i guess bomb is not comeing back huh? sparkles really scared him off, nice work. chris nice work on the pics, whats the history of this station? see or feel any paranormal worth telling about?
HELLO TO ALL
there is pleasure beach..Also not much there anymore..except eerie silence a burned bridge and about 20 abandoned houses with no one around.. lots of abandoned items though. Sparkles..what does being in the military have to do with going to Dudley town?
And being in the military, you do not want to be going to Dudley Town. (Besides, there isn't much there now)
Its called Dudley town...
Bara Hak?
ok ive got a new subject for you all, the abandoned town here in ct has anybody heard of it? ive seen things online and im thinking bout going.
..win. ..OSHA is good..and bad.. and possibly took a bribe..probably not. ..this convo has gone on for a week.
As an OSHA inspector (whose name is in the OSHA database in Washington) if there is ever an injury or death in an area I sign off as being safe, I am held responsible until proven otherwise. Since my signature is on the documents, they come at me first and I have to provide all documentation and test results proving my declaration of a safe work space. If I’m found negligent, I could go to prison. I'm not saying there aren't corrupt OSHA inspectors but to be held accountable federally, the risk vs. reward for taking a bribe is not very favorable.
haha..i didn't work for WM.. I worked for a terminal in new haven county..dealing with these companies.
Waste Management? Chris...Christopher....HOLY SHIT! WE Got Tony Sopranos nephew on the boards!!
Sparkles..im actually very familiar with your employer..they worked hand in hand with my old job.. You should know how involved they can get with that type of business..Same thing with Waste Management services.
I too have dealt with OSHA..I had to call them after I got fired from a scrap terminal that I worked at. The company was handed out big fines for faulty equipment and breaking proper disposal techniques for waste oil etc etc..they then fired the workers involved..I got cut a pretty nice check to shut my mouth..OSHA however..says that they wanted me to settle because they were looking to break the company down on a much LARGER scale..I feel that OSHA is a bit dirty with tactics..but they will definitely cut you in when your working for a large company that they want to bully. The people that come out and do inspections are meticulous. I have seen them under trucks..in barges in scrap piles and testing water..it's crazy..they checked lockers for safety equipment and even measured out distance to fire extinguishers from one another..it's crazy..they go through alot of work to prove a point.
I don't act like I know it all. And for your information, I didn't just sit in an office all day. I was out in the plant frequently. I even reported safety things before. Trust me when I say OSHA is not a very big fan of the company I worked for. I paid lots of fines because they were dumb. (They couldn't even produce an MSDS book to paramedics one time) As someone who has seen OSHA up close, I kind of know what I am talking about. Not to mention that when I worked at another place I called OSHA on my boss. My dad works with them as well. I think I know a little bit about how it works. So yeah, you might have some shifty people at times, but not with stuff like that.
Archie, you have access on a need to know level. What you are reading is what the people who hired you want you to read. Any "covert" information would be catogorized well above the level of the average worker, kept under lock and key (literally) and not left lying around for anyone to casually browse. Classified info cannot, by DOD directive, be accessable thru non-classified means, and at various levels of sensitivity, must be kept under cypher lock in secured rooms.
And with all due respect, I doubt you have the clearance level to access it.
Having dealt with sensitive information in the past, I can tell you :
A) that the government takes security VERY seriously, B) most of what is "classified" is incredibly boring C) any agency that allows said information out, if discovered, will suffer severe sanctions, including loss of security privlidges, and possable gov't contracts. D) any individual who views said information and discloses it in violation of DOD directives, can be held accountable, including fines and jail time, it can be construed as espionage. Military personel can be court martialed. Depending on the severity of the breach, they may be tried as traitors, which still carrys the death penalty.
I know a guy who left a repository unlocked one night, and it took him several months of investigations to clear his name.
So, even if you were to find some classified "dirt", you better keep it to yourself, or the Gov't agents WILL be knocking on your door! Trust me on this, these boys have NO sense of humor with anything even vaguely related to national security. They WILL come down on you .
i just found out that back in the day when nsh was still operational the navy would send people to nsh for various reasons, and they would also use nsh for various reasons. im gonna see what i can dig up but i think i may be on to something that may be a big missing peice of the nsh puzzle. i will share info as i come across it. lol i love haveing access to things hehehehehe
you guys do have very good points, but the thing is it did happen, the facility that i worked at has been shut down, and i could never find out the reasons why but i already know. sparkles, really? u always gotta act like you know it all? open youre mind a little and be a free thinker for once, shit like this does happen. you would be surprised what happens inside plants when all the office people just stay in there office. i was once hit by a hi/lo and the guy drove off, i wasnt hurt so i didnt give a rats but it just goes to show you these things happen. lol i do gotta say one thing, if osha had a chance to inspect the military, they would have heart attacks!!! anyways, has anybody heard about the abandond town here in connecticut? i saw something about it and was very interested anyboy ever been?
