Norwich-State-Hospital
The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Special thanks to Dr. Bob for sharing the old postcards.
You could also just use numbers..those are endless options..however A-G was a great start.
hhmmm. A lot more letters to work with then I thought. lmao
English uses 26 letters, German uses 30 letters, Irish 20 letters..I believe there is 28 in the Hebrew alphabet.. .
A) Blaze24=Sweat Leaf (spelled wrong)=Bomb=Diggity Dog=John=DOUCHE BAG
B) Bomb does not go to Seaside. (At least not as often as claimed)
C) If he was a Seaside he was not with a girl. And if he was she was probably 15 and probably there against her will.
D) He must be real unlucky then because he was supposedly burned a couple months ago. (He wasn't) My dad got burned at work and he ended up in the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital for over 3 weeks. There is no way anyone would be out walking around a couple of days after getting burned.
E) Lots could kill bomb. Would you like me to demonstrate for you?
F) The only new home he would ever have is the crappy little apartment he would be stuck renting if his wife ever woke up and kicked him out.
G) John, stop talking to me. You are a tool. A pathological liar. A moron. A loser. I want my stuff back. I'll be down there tomorrow.
19 more letters of the alphabet. Should I keep going?
JUST A THOUGHT DO YOU THINK BOMB IS NOW MAKING SEASIDE HIS NEW HOME? SPARKLES WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS.
HE LIVES I SAY HIM AT SEA SIDE SATURDAY HE IS REALLY FUCK UP BUT HE DID NOT SEE BE THANK GOD HE WAS WITH TWO OTHER PEOPLE ONE GUY AN ONE GIRL. I REALLY THINK SWEAT LEAF WAS TELLING THE TRUTH BECAUSE HALF OF BOMB FACE IS BURNED AN BOTH OF HIS HAND,S ARE TO. CAN ANYTHING KILL THIS DUDE
Dealing isn't that bad. (It all depends on what they're dealing though.) But you sentence scumbags and I'll kick their asses. haha
You'd be better off as a rep or congressman. They do the majority of the lawmaking. President really doesnt have much power, for a lawmaking perspective. Signs them into law, but doesnt have the time to research the ideas and formulate them into law-jargon.
I would like to be a judge, but I'd be a "hanging judge" and inflict maximum sentances on skumbags! "What you meen, I get 50 years for dealing?" Hey, you dont like it, dont come back!
Sorry to burst you're bubble, but I don't really see that as ever happening. Maybe though. Who knows.
i was thinking about running for president, and maybe get something done around here! lol
The Navy sucks. They wouldn't take me. I could go and possibly risk my life yet they're worried about me having medical problems. That makes sense.
Problem there is a) you are not allowed to carry a gun. And b) you need a permit for EVERYTHING, and they are not cheap. Dont know about Germany.
Plus, running away from the problem is not solving it. If you want it changed, YOU need to get elected, or get on a committee to change things.
its even worse being in the military, the whole structure of it is jacked. its worse than being a civilian because the government gets to tell you what you can and cannot do. we have no rights pretty much. i mean i understand i signed a contract and all but nowhere in that contract did i see the part where they get to treat us like shit. o well, only 4 years left and im outta here and aint comeing back.
Our whole government sucks. We need to vote out everyone who is currently in. Our forefathers are turning in their graves at what we have become as a nation. It's supposed to be we the people. Not them the government. When was the last time that we could say that our government represents the common person and looks out for our best interest? (honestly) Hasn't been in my lifetime that's for sure.
yeah thats a good idea, im going to move to germany
That would be why I am going to make something of myself and move to Australia.
now i have seen rocks way more brighter than the government of this state. i just wanted to say that, being that im from a different state that has the lowest unemployment and tourist rate, i would have to say that this state is run by a bunch of incompetent slow-minded pricks that have no commen sense in the least bit. sometimes i just sit there and just wonder how this poor state has made it so far with such a incompetent state government. God help connecticut.
Happy Birthday, Sparkles Mom.
Hmmmm. That's interesting. And yeah, real good security when the guards are running around the property stealing. So hard to sneak by security when they aren't even doing their damn jobs! haha
And everyone it's my mom's birthday today. Say happy birthday to her. (She reads this site all the time) lol
Former Norwich Hospital property’s security cost state $545,000
By DEBORAH STRASZHEIM Norwich Bulletin Posted Mar 06, 2010 @ 11:10 PM Last update Mar 06, 2010 @ 11:19 PM
Preston, Conn. — On Sept. 19, a man and a woman were fishing at the pond on the former Norwich Hospital property. Security saw them and didn’t call police, but gave them a warning.
They were among only 24 reported instances of trespassing in 2009
The state paid $545,000 annually for security at the former Norwich Hospital property last year.
That’s $22,700 per encounter between the people they caught trespassing and the guards.
“That seems a bit steep to me,” said Kent Borner, chairman of the Preston Redevelopment Agency, which is overseeing the site’s development.
Preston bought the 390-acre Norwich Hospital property from the state last year and must assume all of its bills starting Friday. Now that the town owns the land, it’s learning what the state paid for in the past and what it actually got for the money.
Among the discoveries by the Redevelopment Agency is that the insurance company doesn’t even factor in security; the liability insurance quote for Preston is $43,000, whether the property has a security force or not, Borner said.
The property repeatedly has been burglarized and vandalized over the years.
In 2007, state police arrested several individuals for trying to steal copper from the buildings.
Two security guards with the firm Securitas of New London, then overseeing the hospital property, also were arrested on multiple larceny and burglary charges in connection with a hospital property theft.
The issue of theft has become particularly important because Preston is depending on money from scrap metal and salvage to offset costs to taxpayers.
Borner said thefts tend to come in waves, based on the price of scrap metal, which is high right now. He said hospital buildings have been broken into frequently in the last month, sometimes nightly. Town employees walking through the property also have encountered ladders and other evidence of recent break-ins.
The state Department of Public Works, which managed the property for Connecticut, contracted with Security Services of Connecticut to provide a uniformed security presence on the Preston and Norwich parcels at a cost of $545,554.91 for this fiscal year, according to a department spokesman.
The 24-hour security includes three guards and a supervisor; security officers can’t issue tickets, but call the police. The detail reported 24 instances of trespassing, according to a document summarizing their activity and viewed by members of the redevelopment agency.
“The actual criminals who are stealing us blind down there have never been caught,” Borner said, adding later, “When we catch someone walking their dog, we don’t want it to cost us $22,000.”
One way to handle security may be to require whatever contractor is chosen to demolish buildings and handle salvage also to establish a perimeter around the main campus and keep it secure.
First Selectman Robert Congdon said some security must remain.
“How long would that list (of trespassers) be if the general public knew that there was not any deterrent on the site?” he said. “You certainly don’t want to create an attractive hazard.”
But Congdon said the town can be creative. If security guards can call police, so can others. Workers mowing the grass or plowing the roads could call police if they see a trespasser, he said.
He said it’s impossible to know how much has been stolen from the hospital or to estimate its value.
“I think you can estimate the value of the neglect of the property,” Congdon said. “You’ve got 1.4 million square feet of property. If that property had been properly maintained, you’d have $400 million worth of property.
“Now the buildings, in square footage, are worth negative money.”

There is nothing because there was no accident. Although there was a motorcycle accident down the street from my house yesterday. But that's irrelevant. And he's not worth the time of day for me to be checking. I don't really care either way. And you would be next just because of your weird stories.
And off topic, (I'm a little slow), but Oprah lives in CT too.
And it's great that my mother posted. She was going to post as "Sparkles Creator" but she didn't. Isn't she awesome? haha Love you momma dukes! Happy Birthday!
