The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

its true, theres a whole thing about her parents sueing, the court records for it are all over the place onling because it got really big back when it happened. the girl was still a patient there but wasnt supposed to be cause she was supposed to be moved to the hospital over near hartford

to all you who think im sneeking around the nsh property you are wrong. i was granted access some time ago to do exploreing as long as i used operational risk management. its called if you know people on the inside they can do things for you. i dont worry about gaurds because they have been briefed on my presence. lol so if you think youre the queen of this you are sooo wrong. im not trying to be better than you, and i dont claim to be, youre the one who brought up that idea in the first place, but i will say that being on the inside has its perks, we can do things most civilians cant. like pull strings to get access to places. so, if you want to sit there and act like the queen go ahead, i really dont care, but for all our sake, stop replying to anything i post, it seems like u always want to have the last words lol its ok, i like a good arguement, keeps things interesting! lol
Oh, Man, I would NOT want to be in the service and get caught tresspassing! Last thing an enlisted person needs is to have their commanding officer called down to the barracks and read the riot act about "Is this how your people perform under your command!!??!" I know a guy that gave a salesperson a hard time over a promotional item (Washingtons Birthday cherry pie), and when the manager called the base commander and bitched about how the service man behaved, he recieved a personal visit from not only the serviceman but his commanding officer, and they BOTH apologized to the salesperson, plus a letter was recieved from the base commander apologizing. Word thru the grapevine was that the CO was reprimanded, and sailor was busted in rank and paygrade, and assigned the lowest, dirtiest job they could find, until he was suddenly re-assigned to some far northern listening station. Probably finished out his time shoveling snow 16 hours a day in 40 below weather.
Anyway, just a word of caution to any of you enlisted U.E. out there. The armed services will find something to occupy your spare time if you make a practice of getting caught!

Otis Library. They have accepted some documents before for histrical preservation. After their renovation, I dont know what was done with them. But, that would be a good start. Go and ask, anyway, I'm sure they will help with anything they have.
Norwich town hall. Should be able to get some good starter info there. Must have been a lot of paperwork to run the place in the town of norwich. You'll probably have to physically go there and search for a few days. Tell them you are a student searching for info. Which is true. Maybe not a college student in a formal class, but anyone studying something is a student.
norwich historical society. Again, they may have some good leads to start from. norwichhistoricalsociety.org
I dont know how the Federal Freedom of information act would dovetail with the State Records on NSH, I would imagine there might be concerns if you were trying to access patient records, but I really dont know if Doctor/patient priviledge applys once you have filed any info with the state, if it then becomes "public". But, you should be able to get info on employees there, who and how long, and with a little leg work, you could locate some of them and with a polite request , you might be able to get some more info from them. I know they auctioned off a lot of stuff at the end, you should be able to access who bought what. Even if they balk at providing what they view as "sensitive" info, ask for a redacted copy. You may still be able to fish some stuff out of it.
I assume you have exhausted all the internet resources. Skeptical of the veracity of internet postings anyway.

These homeless could be a good source for you. Bring them some pop-top cans of food, bottles of water (no booze- especially bad in the winter), and some goodwill blankets, and ask for them to snoop around and find you some documents/paperwork/whatever. If you get caught, you are simply a good samaritin providing for the basic needs of these poor folks, during a cold winter. If you can get these people to do the work for you, they could provide a wealth of information. Even if they dont, you've still done a good thing. Could be a win win situation. Bring some people with you, in case some of them get belligerent. BUT. I'll wager there are some that will be willing to "horse trade" with you.
