Norwich-State-Hospital
The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Special thanks to Dr. Bob for sharing the old postcards.
The train isn't there for any specific reason. And there is nothing in the houses across the street except for some homeless people who don't want you around. And where are they getting these "bodies" from? Ohhh maybe they're snatching up trespassers and performing lobotomies and other strange tests on them. That could even be what happened to those missing college students that went there and were never seen again..... haha I can tell stories too. And as far as the spirits go, they don't want to hurt anyone. You've seen one to many freakin movies that's all. And let me ask you this, you've been driving by but have you ever actually been on the grounds before? Yeah, didn't think so. If you're so convinced they're shipping off dead bodies then why don't you go stake out this train you speak of? Or will the restless spirits attack you and mutilate your body?
ok so ive been driving by nsh for the last few days and ive noticed there is a train sitting on the tracks behind the hospital, its weird because the cars look like its a coal train but theres nothing in them. maybe they are getting ready to do a big shipment of dead and processed bodys that died in the labs that are underground. also ive noticed that none of the gaurds ever go to the other side of the road, so im thinking that these other buildings on the other side of the road will be easier to get to, especially if you hike through the woods to get there, u could almost do it in the daytime. just wanted to suggest that. also i found a website that has a ton of pictures of the neighborhood and houses that is apart of nsh, definatly some interesting stuff. also, i think if they ever tried to bulldoze the place they woulld have a mess on their hands because i think the spirits that live there are a little too powerful. ive felt there strength and energy as i drive by, and i know they want the real story to be told, and some of them want to deal out pain like the pain that was dealt to them, thats why i suggest if you roam the halls at night, be prepared, you never know what youre gonna run into.
I'll see what I can find.
I'm working on some legal places right now. But I want to research more about NSH and not many people seem to know what the hell they are talking about. Would it be possible to help dig up some info? I plan on checking out the library but since I'm not from around there it makes things a bit more difficult for me. When I find some more legal places I will definitely let you know and you can come along if you would like. Paul won't kick anyone's butt unless they have an agenda of their own... Like me... I want to do the exploring, not be explored... But if anyone is interested then I made up an email. It's sparkles_believes@yahoo.com
Well, I have a lot of obligations right now- Scouts, work and upkeep on the house(s). And as I noted before, I really am not as spry as i once was, nor am i willing to cross the line onto private property and get nailed with a trespassing fine. I wouldnt mind exploring some legal access sites, for historical or even paranormal investigating. Again, I belive I mentioned way back that i am a skeptic, but maintain an open mind, I just believe if there is a mundane explanation for an event, then one must assume that is what caused it.
(Apologies to all you U.E out there, but these old bones dont run and jump too well anymore, and if I was being chased by a guard, , it wouldnt be much of an effort on his part! )
If you come up with something like that, then I wouldnt mind tagging along and seeing what we could dig up. Or if you find some documents or other items that you are stymied with, I might be able to help decipher them.
Please, no offense intended, I just dont want to deal with the monumental amount of BS that would get piled on me, both personally and professionally, should I get busted wandering around NSH.
Also, I dont need Paul kicking my butt!
So I still need people to join my team and help me out with things... JPT, you seem to be knowledgeable, would you be interested in helping me out with some information?
To answer the question, Sparkles, I dont know what their current policy is. As I said, It was many, many moons ago that I roamed those hallowed halls. Over 30 years back. So I am probably not the best source of information about current college policy.
But, I applaud anyone who trys to further their education, I know I probably sound like someones parent (or grandparent for some of you young whippersnappers), but your education really is the most important thing for your future. That said, remember that all your transcript does is get you in the door of the company you want work for. THEN, you gotta prove yourself!
Bomb, just to let you know your wife will be receiving some pictures. Maybe for Valentine's day? We'll see. But expect them to show up at some time....
hahahaha. The douche bag guard on third shift he is talking about would be himself. (He's a little too slow to realize that he doesn't work there anymore!) But hey, does bombs buddy Lee still work there? He hasn't posted in a while. Do you think they even realize that they're starting shit with each other on here? lmao
did we forget that bomb is a half wit security guard (formerly at NSH) and compulsive liar? please John stop the madness...no1 believes a incorrectly spelled word you write...penishole...that is all....
hey ricky bobby i think he work on 3rd there,s not just one unkind guard there all FUCKERS if you know what i mean iam going this weakend to raise some hell an i can care lease if the gaurd,s from nsh read this an are waiting fot me to ever one good luck !
In my opinion, I find that one is better going to CC for knocking out the Gen Ed credits and transfering to a State University to finish up the Undergrad. I did that for my Undergrad, saving tons of $ and transfering over 60 credits. I'm getting ready to graduate with my MBA in April!
Which building is the most impressive from pass experience for viewing internally? Which shift does the "unkind" guard work? I feel bad for the guards, anyway, because I am sure they are very underpaid for what they do and get heckled alot from determined explores....
Yay... But with all the snow everywhere it feels like it will never get warm.
It's almost warm enough to break out the urban exploring gear!!!!
I'm going to go for nursing. It's such a pain though. And I already took a few psych classes which I hope will transfer. Do you know if I will have to take the placement tests again?
What are you taking classes for? Engineering, medical related..? I would think the State required classes like Lit and Economics would be transferable, whereas stuff like Calc 2 would probably not. I was able to "test out" of a couple classes, based on my tech school training (drafting classes). Look into "life credits" also, your job may convert into some creds. At the prices they charge these days, every little bit helps.
Awesome. Thank you. This whole school thing is a pain in the ass. I have to take all these classes before I can even apply for the program I want. And they don't make it easy to figure everything out. I hope they can transfer my credits that I got before. (before I got stupid and quit going to classes)
Went there back before the turn of the century, when it was only Thames Valley CC. Depends on what you are looking to study I suppose. Got my eng. degree, and at the time it was a pretty good place to go. They have just recently mega-expanded, I believe consolodating campuses (may be wrong, there, just a guess.) Just be sure that you can transfer credits if you wish to expand your education beyond their level. At the time (back when the Ford Pinto was cool!) there was some issue with that, but now that they have expanded, I hope that was corrected.
Anyway, that just old JPTs opinion, and you know the rest.
Does anyone know anything about Three Rivers Community College in Norwich? I need to go to school, and soon. I'm about to start slapping around some of my coworkers. I don't want to stay here the rest of my life.....
EVERY ONE OF THOSE GAURDS ARE ASS HOLES.an none of them are armed please they would shoot there foot cleaning the damn thing,s lol
None of the guards are armed. They are actually really nice people. Well, with the exception of one anyways... They feed the stray kitties
i agree with dun and bomb about the women and deographics . first hand facts guards absolutely have access to all buildings and tunnels. also one guard is armed for sure. The other two im not sure of.
the gaurds have no access from the CHILLER to any tunnels. you can check out the cemetery during the day but closeies at sun down but if your good you can walk right in lol an if you what to watch the gaurds the best building to do this is gallup building it should be on your map good luck
shadowhawk and others, thank you for answering the Chiller "?" I asked previously. I apologize for my misuse of the correct terminology for the facility; I was previously misinformed, myself.
I have heard the guards access the tunnels from the Chiller shack to perform their patrols of the campus; is this correct? From looking at Google maps, it appears there are 3 cars in the vicinity of Chiller shack, which is located in front of Seymore and on the side of Lodge, so maybe assuming there are 3 guards (per shift) on site at all times(?).
From the below posting, it seems that if you want to check out the cemetery (Brewster Neck Cemetery), the guards will not bother you; is my assumption correct?
I have not found too many stories of "crazy" women at NSH; mostly stories of men. I would be interested in reading about such people!!!
Bear in mind, during the majority of the time the hospital was open, society was male dominated. More politically correct for a woman, deemed at the time as the weaker and submissive partner in a marriage, to be "diagnosed" as unstable and commited for therepy. I am sure some of the female patients there were the results of a male pointing the finger and saying she was crazy, because she tried to kill him with a kitchen knife, while all he did was knock her around a bit when she got mouthy. Different time, and different morals and ethics. Most likely would be a different demographic, with what is accepted/forbidden today.
So how may of the people consigned there were REALLY crazy, as opposed to fighting against some real (not imaginary) personal injustice? Does anyone have any documentation alluding to that?
But thats just JPTs opinion, and you are welcome to your own.
Whoever you're getting your info from should have been a patient. They're crazy. They have no clue what they are talking about......
the reason there were more women is because they are more likely to go crazy!! lol but yeah it really does make sense. anyways, i received info over the weekend that some of the patients werent really patients as well as the doctors, some of them werent docs either. im curious what they were doing
Actually, what dun said makes sense...
hey asshole i said the DOCUMENT I FOUND AT NSH THIS MEANS THERE WAS MORE WOMWEN THEN MEN AT NSH.TARD
what you call the cooler shed the real name is the CHILLER if you park in front of the cemetary open the gate on the right side an walk thur all way to the back an look thur the trees there will be the CHILLER.THERES ONE PROBLEM THE GAURDS HAVE SET UP CAMP IN THIS BUILDING GOOD LUCK
