The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Realistically, Plum Island isn't that far away from where Lyme Disease was discovered. They do all this secret stuff with animals. They supposedly shoot the ones that try and get away. It makes sense. You should read the book Plumb Island by Nelson DeMille. It's a really good book and it gets you thinking. Back to work I go...
Lyme disease (Actually a bacteria carried by deer ticks)was named after the town it was discovered in, and to the best of my knowledge Plum Island is animal research. Could you find a conncetion there, well, maybe on a stretch. I personally believe its simply a mutation of the bacteria.
As for legal accessability, thats pretty much a must. Running and hiding days are long past.

My point was, GK, that there are ways to see things anywhere in an open society like ours- any public gathering place could be viewed as having a hidden, more sinister function if you were looking to place one there. Especially one like the casinos, where there seems to be a never ending amount of construction going on. Honestly, the government wouldnt hide in such an obvious place, they'd run it some place like CDC, or Plum Island , in a more geographically secluded location, where they could work more openly.

As for Bomb, I know he was caustic, and pist a lot of people off, but I still thought he had something to offer, and his focus was mostly on the site. Even if it was to torment somebody about being there.
What I would like to see is more photos or even some video of the NSH. Recent stuff, I'd love to see the decay in the tunnels, and some "then and now" pics from some of the pics posted here.
As for ghosthunting, well, find a site thats legal to explore, and I'd like to try and go poke around. As stated before, I dont say it dont exist, but if there is a mundane explanation, that really degrades the credibility of paranormal events. I would consider it quite an amusing adventure to actually confront a legit "ghost'. Ask what their reason for hanging around is, what they want , what their life was like, etc etc . I doubt if I will ever be given the chance to experience such an encounter, skeptic that I am, but it would be fun! And that s what life should be about, having fun!
Has anyone heard anything about the old Stone House up on Misery Mountain in Pachaug Forest? (Be carefull, a couple weeks ago, it was found that some one had moved the lid off the old well, and thats about 75 feet deep, so just be carefull stomping around up there, you fall in and you're good as dead, the stonework will muffle any calls. Dont know if its still off, or if the DEP went and put it back.) It looks old and "creepy" enough, but dont know if there are any legends about hauntings or paranormal events associated with it.
But thats just JPTs opinion, and you are certainly welcome to your own!

hmm that is a very good point, see this is what im trying to accomplish, people takeing a look at the big picture. and comeing up with theorys. this could be possible, it could also be possible that maybe there is a tunnel under the river from the casino to the hospital. i do have to say, when i moved here i thought that it was very random to have a casino out in the middle of nowhere. im just saying. ive also had this thought, across the street from nsh, diagonally is a factory, maybe there could also be a tunnel from the to the hospital, cause if youre going to run an operation like this there must be multiple access points, for entrance and on the rare occasion escape.............

GAtekeeper- Hey maybe you're looking at the wrong riverbank- why not have an installation at the Casino? Lots of traffic, a few extra trucks wouldnt be noticed, all the public attention is focused on the (controversial) casino, and as its Tribal Land, they can restrict access to anyone except Federal, and if the Feds are the ones doing the experiments...Just throwing a little gas on your conspiricy fire, my friend!

ok heres another thought, what if there is another underground tunnel for access to the testing facility underwater? it would be perfect especially with a submarine base right down the road? i think its possible. and just so everyone is clear, i am not crazy, these theorys are just theorys that i have come up with, they may be true, they may not be. i just like to put puzzle peices together and imagine the possibilitys.
The pier is there because when it was more isolated the oil for heat was delivered by tanker to fill the 2 huge tanks on the river. no tunnel down there tho. just old root cellar and pump house. the reason there are trains parked is the rail line workers access tracks from NsH and store repair equipment and trains on the tracks by the North lagoon. its just a easy access point. and was state land...Preston/Norwich have purchased it.
ok so i found this picture www.railpictures.net check out this pic, it kinda shows how my theory could work. not only could this operation be supplied by train but also by boat, hence the big boat dock. idk im just saying, think about that train arriveing while its dark out with who knows what as its cargo, and a hidden tunnel somewhere around there opens, and there ya go. top secret operation, with gaurds to scare people away from figureing it out. idk what do you guys think?
