Norwich-State-Hospital
The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Special thanks to Dr. Bob for sharing the old postcards.
I am down to get pictures, and or video of those assholes breaking code and whatever. I love this place with all of my heart, as I am sure alot of you do. I research it, and love going there, I don't dick around there. I would love to prolong this demolition process as long as possible so if anybody had any ideas, or needed help I will try my best to help. Once this place comes down I really don't know what I will do, probably enter a deep dark depression.
P.S there is a video on youtube posted a couple of days ago of a crane doing some work near the theater, it looks like something with a tunnel maybe. Anybody know what that is about?
As I have been reading on this site about catching those construction assholes breaking code, and whatnot, I am so down to help get pictures, and video. I would love to prolong this process as long as possible and want to do anything to help. I don't go there to dick around, I research it, and love the site with all of my heart like I know some of you guys do. If anybody wants to email me about what I can to do help out I promise to do anything I can. ickles69333@aim.com" title="mailtoickles69333@aim.com">Pickles69333@aim.com.
That road has already been gone down. Almost a year ago. When the state started "abatement" in the tunnels from Powerhouse to the theater.. There was a video of a town employee smashing and back-filling the tunnels with a backhoe submitted to wtnh, Public works, PRA, The day and to the State itself.. A few phone calls were received in regards and as expected they reported that they were working under a permit, and trespassing is Illegal. There's really no way to stop anything they are doing on the site. The project is backed by numerous state and federal agencies with tons of money granted towards the project.. They aren't just a regular "Joe" doing housework.. They have lawyers that will pop you like a zit if you stand in the way of anything they are planning here. Just sit back..Remember the times you may have had there.
ill help get pics im up that way alot if anybody wants to help email me afdsbravest@yahoo.com
we all have to get pic or video of the preston town works breaking any state codes on the demo because we all know they knock in the tunnels with was againest every state code i can think of ok so i can bet they will do it again if we get it on video or pic bring it to the day or bulletin let me know An maybe we can slow this all down or stop it

Ahh, I found the article..no good at all.
Anything more specific on your end bro? I'm gonna check it out, but am stuck at work..
When is it coming down? What was said? went into a couple buildings yesterday but not the main side of the street. Too many construction workers... some shots... video214.com
As anybody read the day paper yet this really suck the old girl is coming down
Lippitt can be pretty risky.. If you get spotted: no where to go. And they DO check it and will come in there. And yep, it's on the Norwich bit, so it still has actual security + occasional staties + the construction guys to watch out for.
I do my research unlike the assholes that just want to go there and dick around. lol. I still want to write a book or something about it but I don't know exactly what angle yet.
Hey sparkles 100% right about lippitt an the fence good job
ive only been in there 2x any chance i can meet up with anybody ?
It was used as the surgery/operating building. They did labotomys and everything there. And I'm not sure why it doesn't have a fence but my best guess would be it's because it's in Norwich and the others are in Preston.
how do i get into the admin???
I will be in admin see you at 2am an if i feel this is a set up i will just leav in the shadows.
Can somebody tell me what the Lippitt building was used for, and why for some reason it was not enclosed in the fence?
hey bro i got a whole backpack filled with goodies for tomarrow night....lol....u know what im talking about!! lol

Cturbex has over 300 members huh? Haha.. I doubt there's that many idiots that are part of some waste of time group that's meant to explore ..over explored sites in CT..being that your named cturbex..it really doesn't matter how u see ME personally..but obviously if that's hoow your portrayed in the rather ..small.. community of urban explorers in ct..it obviously says something for your exploring habits.being that cturbex is tagged in multiple locations..I still say your a hack at what you do..give it up and take your party elsewhere to light fires and smash shit.
I wouldn't suggest going in there anymore... not the best idea.
Here we go again.. There's no fooking need to start saying what's "wide open" and whatnot.. Stfu! And to ANY vandals: We'll vandalize yo ass if we see you..douchebaggin' it up.
