Welcome to the Hudson River State Hospital located in the United States in Poughkeepsie, New York. This gigantic hospital has overlooked the Hudson River for 136 years since its initial construction in 1871. The various hospital buildings were constructed and belong to the famous Kirkbride architectural order (read more on this excellent website).
The hospital was divided into two wings, for male and female patients, with an administration section located in the center. The male wing was much larger than the respective female wing. This was caused by the number of patients being unequal between the sexes (see the sky view from the hospital using the link above).
The beauty of the decay was unbelievable in this hospital. Most of the original constructions had been preserved.
Future renovation construction of the hospital were planned long ago. A fire, caused by lightning, burned the male wing in June 2007. As of the date of this article, the fate of Hudson Psyche Center remains unknown.
Hopefully this awesome Kirkbride will be saved. The United States is certainly not Europe and listing historical buildings as monuments might not be enough to protect them…

I agree with Wardy about the point of urban explanation and it's meaning. I just want to say that in my own backyard I have the glenwood power station and the abandoned Boyce Thompson institute. Neither are comparable to a state hospital but they pose their own unique challenges and dangers. I know them both like the back of my hands and I know tons of entryways, I've even been confronted by police and I know that the cops won't come into buildings to get you or wait all day and night for you to come out, but for me to get in my car and drive an hour to explore HRSH is a hassle and it's an even bigger pain when I get there and cannot find any entryways and always worrying about possibly being arrested.
I don't think there is anything wrong with people asking information, though it is cheating, I do want to make the most out of my trips and see everything without being arrested, paying fines, having to worry about my car and getting home, etc.

What is urban exploration?
Urban exploration. It goes by many names such as UE, UrbEx, Infiltration, and Reality Hacking. It is all about going into places you are “not supposed" to go. Urban exploration has 2 different meanings for me:
The first one is related to the city we live in. We are enclosed, almost entrapped, in this urban environment. We follow the streets guided by the paths that are drawn, no chance to escape our average everyday existence. Urban exploration is the research, documentation, escape, exploration, and mapping of these forbidden spaces that include maintenance or service areas, utility tunnels, abandoned buildings, such as mental institutions, and basically any place where the everyday public are not supposed to be. Open a door, cross a fence, or sneak into a hole and you visit the world of Urban Exploration. You have left the normal world, you are exploring.
The second meaning is related to the abandoned places or utility tunnels themselves. Sometimes these hulking structures lay rotting in the middle of the city and sometimes they are in the quiet suburbs abandoned and waiting in silence. These are places isolated from the “normal” world, places most people will never venture into or see. This what drives you to these forbidden places and changes everything in your reality with your first step forward. With that step you are in, you are exploring.

I concure. I thought about meeting up with people to have a guide, but then I thought again about people setting you up to get busted.
