du-gouffre-collieries
Another abandoned coal mine in the region of Charleroi. Lot of these in Belgium. The mine shaft number 10 closed down in 1960 and became abandoned. The mine opened in 1916 and the buildings date from 1934.
Although they are mostly empty, no more machines, no more pit-head frames, one can still imagine the activity of this site.
Funny fact: a zoo opened in this place in 1982 and set up in the buildings. Cages are remaining almost everywhere...
You might find more photos from this place on other websites that look different. It looks like the center part of the main building has been demolished and cleaned up. Maybe a rehabilitation?
We went there on a typically Belgian sad and rainy day, and the view on the slag heaps was rather sad.
We have visited this location yesterday. The location is a stock for concrete products, and a dog is watching the site. We felt unpleasant to access the site, although we might have had a chance to enter it through the fences at the backside.
...you can visit the Charbonage de Gouffre, it's still at the Place! ;-)
Does anyone know the exact address of this building? And can you enter it, or do you need a key or something?
