Eight-Churches-In-Brussels
Churchophilia. What a time-consuming, addictive and frustrating hobby! How many lost nights have we returned empty-handed, our ambitious but unachieved plans, months of waiting, renovation that never renovate, how many chicken legs eaten in Brussels’ Chinatown just waiting for the proper time to make our move...
Though when it works everything is forgotten; overpowered by so many beautiful discoveries!
Concrete, stone or brick. Raw, carved, finished, delicate, high above the ground like aerial filigree! These old ladies are all different, each with their own little secrets, hidden passages and unknown treasures. So many invisible features! All of this for the priests, the pigeons... and us?
Frozen moments.
The organist rehearsing at 2 in the morning, breaking the silence of this sanctuary.
Henk unintentionally walking on the baby pigeons nesting in the roof spaces.
The bells we ring with our tripod, clanging over the quiet streets at times none would expect.
A little golden beer shared at the bottom of the weathervane, sometimes golden also.
The Aussies, English, Canadians, etc... to whom we show around, showing off a little of our heritage.
This series covers eight of Brussels' churches. Fret not, there will be more! - photographed between 2004 and 2010.
- Notre-Dame du Sablon (wiki) -the little gothic jewel
- Notre-Dame de Laeken (wiki) - the aerial lace
- Saint-Jean-Baptiste-au-Béguinage (wiki) - the burnt one
- Saint Boniface in Ixelles (Tchorski) - the challenge
- Saint Joseph in Evere - the hangover
- Saint-Hubert in Boisfort (Tchorski) -the frozen one
- L'église Stassart in Ixelles (Tchorski) - Destroyed the sacred aura surrounding
- And a couple of unusual sights on the Cathedral Saints-Michel-et-Gudule (wiki) - the Untouchable
There's no history lesson here since others are covering that much better than myself. However to compensate here's a short series of portraits for a change!
Looks like an epic journey indeed. You have the balls of the church bells you photograph my friend..Talk about high-rise.
